The games on Feb 3 will be at 8:20 p.m. and Feb 4 at 2;30 p.m. all at the Canfield Ice Arena in Dearborn Heights Michigan. Both games will be broadcast live to the Netherlands and across the United States thru Fasthockey.com

CHIEFS CONTINUE TO ROLL ALONG

The Michigan Ice Dogs were the only team to see two different opponents this weekend. The Dogs have been playing extremely well of late, quietly sneaking into the rear view mirror of the East Divisions 1st place. They had a home and home with the Tri City Ice Hawks and then it a short drive to the Canfield Ice Arena to take on their rival, Motor City Chiefs. In their only home contest of the weekend, it was Michael Diaz who proved to be the different. His goal was the game winner scored with just under 7 minutes to play in the 3rd period. He also added 2 assists earlier in the game as the Dogs won 6-5. Saturday saw the two teams head north for a rematch, this time on Tri City’s home ice. The Dogs built a 6-0 lead after two and that’s when things got sloppy. The teams combined for 80 penalty minutes in the final period, including 4 ejections. The Ice Dogs skated away with an 8-1 win when all was said and done.  Michigan had won eight of nine going into Sunday’s match up with Motor City. That only loss came at the hands of the Chiefs. It was a very entertaining game that saw both teams lock up defensively. The Ice Dogs held a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes. It was the first time that the Chiefs had trailed after 2 periods on home ice. Motor City would score 4 times in the final period to earn the 5-2 win. Michigan remains in 3rd place in the East Division standing.

Motor City’s Wheels Continue to Roll

Motor City’s Wheels Continue to Roll

There isn’t much going incorrectly for the Motor City Chiefs so far this season.  The Chiefs are off to a 6-0 start and are 4-0 at the Canfield Ice Arena, after disposing of the, arch rival, Michigan Ice Dogs Wednesday night by a 10-5 margin.

Motor City scored twice in the opening period with the man advantage pulling in front of the Ice Dogs 2-1. It started when Robbie Speer blasted his first of 2 goals behind Ice Dog Goalie Eric Matych at the 10:02 mark. The Chiefs, again, had a Power Play just over 3 minutes later when Tom Novak scored to make it 2-0. It looked like that was the way the first period would end, but James Subu of the Dogs, won the faceoff to himself and beat Brian Ellis over the right shoulder with just 4 seconds left in the first period and Michigan had new life.

The Ice Dog life would not last long as the Chiefs opened the scoring just 29 seconds into the 2nd period when Travis McGucking banged home his 6th of the season from Dalton Pennington and Zack Wiacek.  Pennington, Anthony Dimarco, McGuckin’s 2nd of the game and Robbie Speers 2nd of the game on the Power Play rounded out a Motor City onslaught as they pumped 5 passed Michigan building a 7-1 lead after 40 minutes.

The first half of the 3rd period was more of the same as Motor City built a lead of 10-2. The Ice Dogs, who were playing their first of 4 games this week, wouldn’t go quietly. They scored 3 unanswered goals in the later portions of the 3rd frame to make it a 10-5 final.

Brian Ellis got the win for Motor City improving to 4-0 on the season. Wiacek and McGuckin both chipped in offensively with 4 points apiece.  Motor City is back to work Friday, October 14th as they welcome the St. Louis Frontenacs to town. They also host Indianapolis on Sunday, October 16th.

MOTOR CITY CHIEFS ON ROLL

Motor City took care of business Friday night as Indianapolis came to town. The Chiefs skated away with a 6-0 win on home ice improving to 5-0 on the young season. Keegan McHenry and Brian Ellis combined to stop all 32 shots that they faced and the balanced Chiefs attack had 6 different goal scorers.

It was a rough start for Indianapolis this weekend with a 6-0 loss to Motor City Friday and a 9-1 defeat against Wooster on Saturday, but they rebounded nicely to salvage a split with the Oilers winning 4-3 Sunday. Sunday was a 3rdperiod that saw the teams combine for a total of 5 goals, but Mitch Suchomel had the last laugh as he lit the lamp with just 14 seconds left, lifting the Inferno  to their first win of the 2011 campaign.

CHIEFS OPEN SEASON ON ROAD WITH WINS!

Motor City is Retooled & Ready

Chiefs open with two wins over Kalkaska

There is a small amount of uncertainty and a bunch of unknowns surrounding this year’s Motor City Chiefs squad, but they are prepared for battle.  Despite the unanswered questions, expectations remain high and the ultimate goal is a National Championship and GLJHL Title. Head Coaches Jeff Bond and Dan Vasquez are at the helm for the third straight season and coming off a 33-5-1-1 campaign, they know they will have to search for some new leaders.

The Chiefs lose Jeff McFarland and John Mulligan (last year’s leading scorers), but this year’s Chiefs team has a much more balanced attack. Bond feels that this Chiefs squad has great balance. “We’ll get scoring from at least 2-3 lines a night on a consistent basis and hopefully sometimes all 4. We don’t have the top heavy scoring, but everybody will chip in.” He’s hoping that will put the Chiefs among the GLJHL East Division leaders again,  if not the division championship crown they took last season.

Motor City will rely upon returning veterans Ken Winter, Rob Speer and Travis McGuckin to shoulder the load, especially early in the season. Speer and McGuckin are accustomed to the spotlight, but for Winter, it’s an opportunity for him to flourish and he invites the challenge. Winter, a ’94 birth year, played in 10 games last season for Motor City, but was asked to be a role player. His job was to get the puck in deep and hound the opposition’s defense. The Chiefs staff knew they had a winner and a leader when Winter was able to accept that role as a youngster. Now a veteran, his offensive prowess will be looked to.

Motor City will rely heavily upon the home cooking in the early going. After winning a pair against the GLJHL’s newest member, Kalkaska, they have six straight games at the Canfield Ice Arena in Dearborn Heights and don’t leave home again until October 21.

“We want to get off to a great start,” said Vasquez. “I think that was key for us last year and with the early home games, we’re looking to do the same.”

At Kalkaska, Sept. 10-11, the Chiefs opened against the GLJHL’s newest franchise with wins of 8-3 and 6-0. The Chiefs scored the games opening five goals, but the Roughriders got the first three goals in their franchise history within a 52 second span in the second period to draw within 5-3. The Chiefs swapped starting goalie Brian Ellis for Keegan McHenry who shutout Kalkaska the rest of the way.

Seven different Chiefs scored with Zach Wiacek netting a pair. Anthony Demarco had a goal and two assists. Kyle Kabacinski, Ryan Rinko and Tyler Teglia scored the first three goals in Kalkaska’s history in that order. The Chiefs doubled up their opponents in shots on goal 36-18.

On Sunday, the Chiefs McGuckin scored twice and with Ken Winter getting three assists and Ellis got a measure of revenge playing 25 minutes and 30 seconds, making 22 saves for the win. McHenry finished the last 34 minutes and 30 seconds facing only six shots to complete the shutout.

The Chiefs are next scheduled to play host to Tri-City Ice Hawks the Sept. 23-24 at Canfield. Then in succession four more home contests are on Sept. 30 (Indianapolis), Oct. 5 (Michigan Ice Dogs), Oct. 14 (St. Louis) and Oct. 16 (Indianapolis) before their Oct. 21-22 road trip to play Tri-City at Bay County Arena and Kalkaska again at the Kaliseum.

USA HOCKEY DROPS TIER III LABELS

OPEN LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

On a Junior Council conference call last week the council voted to drop the letters that separated the A, B, C levels for a smoother flow of the teams. This was suppose to happen 4 years ago but the A leagues asked for an extension to promote the A level to all players especially the players that migrated to Canada to play A hockey. After two more years of extensions, the council felt that enough time was given to the leagues to market themselves and educate the public to their specific brand. In essence what this change does is put all tuition based programs (teams) on an even playing field to attract higher level players to all teams and in fact raises the level of play in all leagues.

In the past, B leagues were the development arm to higher levels such as the Tier III A, Tier II NAHL and the Tier I USHL, developing and moving players as they became proficient with their skills to the next level, Tier III A, and then upward and doing it for far less cost to the player and his family and in some cases the B leagues were doing it for $2,000 to $3,000 less than the A leagues, players were missing less school & work and were playing the majority of their 42-48 games on weekends and while still providing scouting showcases and all star weekends.

The popularity of Tier III hockey where all levels are developing players to the next level enjoyed great success at giving the 15-18 old opportunities at the Tier I & II levels but also the College level D-1 thru III, ACHA programs for the 18-20 year old player. Because of the hard work by all the Junior operators, coaches and players, the competitive balance between all Tier III teams has reduced itself to such a point that the players will now have a greater choice in the selection process of where to get what they need at a cost that is not prohibitive in this economy.

No one is claiming to be something they are not, no one is claiming to be better than anyone else, what we are saying, is that you don’t have to spend large amounts of money to achieve an opportunity to excel in this game when you will get the same amount of activity or more, the same opportunities or more and be seen by scouts more often because you will be playing more for a lesser expense.

Leagues, to be successful will market themselves to you, explaining what they provide, what opportunities you will have if you participate in their programs and will tell you

t                 he cost without a hidden agenda and your responsibility will be to absorb all this information good or bad and decide what the best opportunity is for YOU. This is why the G.L.J.H.L. was created and why we are successful.

                  President

                  G.L.J.H.L.

CHIEFS PREPARE TO COMPETE AT TOP LEVEL OF TIER III

CHIEFS Prepare to Compete at the Top Level of TIER III Junior Hockey

With expected changes coming from USA Hockey for 2011, the CHIEFS will hold tryouts with a focus on the recruitment of Junior A level players

The leagues have displayed that it can and will continue to develop and move players to the next level. As shown in the past, the GLJHL has made considerable progress in that area by placing players directly into the N.A.H.L. & COLLEGE programs at a much lower cost than its competitors

With this, the CHIEFS will conduct tryouts with a focus on the recruitment of player talent that can compete at what is nationally the current Junior A TIER III level, for players recruited to the CHIEFS PROGRAM.

The change in concept would allow players in the region to have access to a level field of competition and related visibility as offered in all other regions of the USA.

CHIEFS MOVE TWO PLAYERS TO NAHL

The Chiefs organization on Wednesday moved two more players to Junior A hockey in the NAHL. The Chicago Hitmen of the NAHL wanted to look at two of our leading players and has offered both of them positions on their team. "Matt Reno Defense & Nick Booth Forward have been solid contributors to the success of the Chiefs team this season said Owner & G.M. Lullove, all of our players are being developed to move to the next level. We are extremely proud of the work our coaching staff Dan Vasquez, Jeff Bond, Jeff McFarland have done with our players, developing them so all of the players have the opportunity to move up, that is our job at this level". Moving from Junior B to NAHL Junior A authenticates our coaching methods, our systems and the work ethic that we teach all of our players". 'Chicago Hitmen, said Mark Hammersmith, Owner  of the 3 Chicago Hitmen teams, it does not matter where the talent is or comming from, it's getting the best talent to play at this level. The Motor City Chiefs have done an excellent job in preparing these two players to play here in the NAHL and we will be looking at more  players from the Chiefs as the season moves on".

CHIEFS MOVE PLAYERS TO JUNIOR A

Motor City Chiefs as in the past  has moved three players to the Junior Tier III today. Chiefs sent Matt Reno to Eugene Oregon to the Eugene Generals Junior A for this weekend to play and Jeff McFarland & Kyle McKibbin to the Battle Creek Revolution Junior A for the CSHL Showcase.
